But at least it’ll be over in about ten seconds.” The ten Indians begin their song and dance…but it keeps going, and going, and going…and then all of a sudden King Cole decides to join in…and then all the nursery characters are doing this incredibly awkward-to-witness interpretation of Native American dance which also just keeps going….Īnd what can I really say? Arguments about racism and stereotypes about Native Americans in the media have been made a million times over… but I’ll just say this. Well, it was the 1930s and you can’t be surprised this song is here. The rhyme about ten little Indians starts, and I think to myself, “oh great. We then see a stage where nursery rhyme characters jump out of Pandora’s Box and sing a little song about themselves…and can I ask, why are they coming out of Pandora’s Box? The story of Pandora isn’t even a fairy tale…and is that implying that the evil that came into the world was nursery rhymes…?Īll in all, this short was nearly exactly the same as the other one until about five minutes in, where things get a bit…weird.
And I made the mistake here of assuming that there would be a plot point attached to why they have to leave by then but nope, there’s not.
They then all go to Cole’s castle where he announces the start of the ball, but that they must all leave by midnight. A bunch of other nursery rhyme characters then come out of their storybooks such as Little Boy Blue, Old Mother Hubbard, the Crooked Man, the old woman who lived in a shoe…etc. We start off with King Cole’s storybook opening up with a singing chorus telling us he’s holding a ball…blah blah blah. But in all seriousness, it pretty much is a near carbon copy of “Mother Goose Melodies.” And it’s also just as boring. So without further ado, let’s talk about Disney.Īnd this short is almost exactly like “Mother Goose Melodies,” which I reviewed last month. Once more, it’s time to look at a group of Disney shorts! Today I’ll be talking about four Silly Symphonies that are based on fairy tales, and I’ll be looking at the first short I’ll discuss to star Mickey! Today’s post will be a bit longer than usual I guess I found I had a lot to say about these shorts.
